Recently, a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach came to my mind, in which there is an aria: “Abide ye angels, abide with me…” I think Bach perceived something deep in his soul here that has long since become a reality today: the withdrawal of spiritual beings from our noisy, hectic world, our focus on material values and the glorification of technology. Yes, where have the angels gone? For me, they are spirit guides who have the great responsibility of showing us the way, of leading our souls back to our true home, to the Father’s house of God.
Since angels are spirit beings and do not have bodies, but are close to people, this spiritual guidance can manifest itself in many different ways. It is truly a blessing to become more and more aware of this guidance in your own life. If you say or do something unpleasant, you can physically experience (in the depths of your heart) how our personal invisible companion and guiding angel suffers.
I have experienced this angelic closeness and guidance so often in my life that I know and trust in it. It is a loving guidance with all personal freedom of choice. We are not always protected from wrong paths, but must first take them in order to learn and mature.
Those who seriously strive for faith, love and knowledge will also be granted guidance. In principle, however, support and help is only given to those who set the course for it in their own free will. As a person devotes himself more and more to his inner development, his spiritual advisor will seek him out more often – both the doubter and the seeker of God – and will be ready to support him at the right moment. Guidance, providence, coincidence, that can look so commonplace – encounters with people, words that touch the heart, paths that open up, a loving tailwind from above, books that fall into our hands. Angels work in so many different ways and impress our souls – if we open ourselves to them.
When people today sometimes talk about the importance, indeed the urgency, of reconnecting with God in a world that has gone off the rails, it is a wake-up call for me to go into the silence to hear the gentle beating of angels’ wings again.
We urgently need their advice and assistance in order to learn that we are
never abandoned and never alone.
