To follow the INNER COMMISSION that points to the spiritual Gebser says:
“He who has the courage, or who has been graced, to gain the necessary openness for perceiving the invisible, will at first become aware of the truth of simultaneity and then also of the invisible origin. Of course, for this to be the case there is need for an inner attitude of going beyond oneself, by which one becomes capable of devotion, or unconditional trust and self-opening, which is characterized by the kind of unintentionalness that has nothing to do with passivity, but that is marked by an unforced, superwakeful lucidity. The apersonal can only be perceived by an apersonal, ego-free individual. This wisdom is, incidentally, not only typical of India or Eastern Asia, but also of Christianity: it is a universal, fundamental condition and necessity for humanity.”
In this passage the hermeneutical principle is pointed out that only like can recognize like (similia similibus noscantur).
In alchemical terms is has been said, to be able to make gold you have to turn into “gold” yourself, i.e. perfect yourself .
This also explains that “the secret” of the alchemists protected itself so as not to fall into hands that would misuse its application.
So when for many Gebser`s work has proven a veritable stumbling block. it will continue to be one as long as they do not apply the great lesson of the history of consciousness to their own existence.
The breakthrough into the integral consciousness, in which and as which the spiritual makes itself known in transparency, cannot be accomplished through drugs, awareness-expanding techniques, or technical gadgetry. Instead it requires the persistent and consistent application of oneself to the rendering transparent of the human personality so that consciousness can coalesce, grow together with the spiritual. And this task Gebser calls as our “Inner Commission” a commission that goes beyond us. Gebser says, self-transcendence is the essence of human existence.
